While you were sleeping

I watched you sleep

Teary eyed - you’re here & all mine

And tried to fall asleep myself

While you were sleeping

I tried not to wake you

Tossing & turning in bed

Adjusting to this new life

While you were sleeping

I tried not to move too much

On the couch

Where you’d fall asleep on my chest every afternoon

While you were sleeping

I watched you learn new skills

Your brain and body at work

Soon you’d mumble your first babbles & take your first steps

While you were sleeping

I watched you turn into a full person

Your own expressions and personality

Shining through unapologetically

While you were sleeping

I watched you grow

A little bigger, smarter, stronger

Everyday

While you are sleeping

I look back at pictures and videos

Laugh & cry

Longing for time to slow down

While you are sleeping

I watch you grow more and more each day

Right in front of me

So quickly; in the blink of an eye

While you are sleeping

I ask myself, “how lucky am I"?”
